This course focuses on developing the practical skills and knowledge required to work as deck watch keeper on board vessels. You will learn to perform various tasks in relation to cargo handling, vessel stability and maneuvering, equipment checking and maintenance, operational quality and safety.
In addition, you will learn to communicate using standard marine vocabulary, visual signaling and other maritime equipment. You will learn to determine position of the vessel by using radar and other bridge equipment. You will be taught how to measure and observe weather conditions and interpret and apply these to watch keeping.
This course is aligned to the educational requirements for certification as Deck Watch keeper as described in Marine Orders - Part 71 (Masters and Deck Officers) 2014 under the Australian Navigation Act 2012.
Course structure
To receive the Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watch keeper Deck) students must complete all core units and, if available, a range of additional units.
Core Units
Provide first aid
Maintain vessel stability
Manage loading, unloading and stowage of cargo
Follow vessel security procedures
Observe personal safety and social responsibility
Operate survival craft and other lifesaving appliances
Prevent and fight fires on board a vessel
Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment
Work safely in confined spaces on a vessel
Manage firefighting and fire prevention activities on board a vessel
Control safe access to and on vessel
Provide medical first aid on board a vessel
Respond to emergencies
Apply maritime resource management principles
Provide leadership to crew
Plan and conduct a passage
Use an electronic chart display and information system to navigate safely
Use bridge equipment to determine vessel position
Ensure compliance with environmental management legislation
Inspect and report defects and damage to vessel
Perform basic vessel man oeuvres
Maintain seaworthiness of a vessel
Maintain a safe navigational watch
Transmit and receive information by the global maritime distress and safety system
Transmit and receive information by visual signaling
Career opportunities
Completion of this course offers graduates the ability to gain employment in the international shipping industry as a Deck Watch keeper on any sea-going vessel in any operation area.

国际学生入学条件
Students must have the following
Year 12 or equivalent
Professional qualifications or Certificates of Competency in Maritime Operations can only be achieved via a definite pathway. Certificates are issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as per requirements laid down in Standards of Training, Certification of Watch keeping (STCW) convention of International Maritime Organization (IMO).
These courses are only part of the prerequisites for the eligibility with AMSA for their oral examination prior to actual issuance of the Certificates of Competency. A student must also have specific and necessary training and sea-service before they are eligible for AMSA oral examinations. Students must apply for the AMSA "Eligibility Letter" once they receive a letter of offer from TAFE NSW.
Academic IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (iBT) 46 or Certificate III in Advanced English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent.
