Develop the practical skills and knowledge required to perform various specialized tasks when working as an Engineer Class 2 on vessels over 750kW propulsion power.
You will learn to plan and schedule operations and organize safe maintenance and repair procedures. You will develop skills necessary to operate and maintain electrical machinery and electronic control and engine equipment. Maintenance includes testing and detecting faults and repairing them. You will also learn to manage administration of the vessel including its business, legal and personnel aspects. Other outcomes of the course would include developing skills to perform routine tasks on board a vessel while ensuring safe work practices.
Course structure
To receive the Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 2) students must complete all core units and, if available, a range of additional units.

Apply intermediate principles of marine electro technology
Apply intermediate principles of marine engineering thermodynamics
Apply intermediate principles of marine mechanics
Apply intermediate principles of naval architecture
Apply maritime resource management principles
Demonstrate basic knowledge of ship construction
Demonstrate basic knowledge of ship operation and maintenance
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine auxiliary boilers
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine auxiliary machinery and systems
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine control systems and automation
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine electrical systems
Provide leadership to crew
Work safely in confined spaces on a vessel
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine diesel engines and systems
Additional Units
Contribute to safe cargo operations on liquefied gas tankers
Contribute to safe cargo operations on oil and chemical tankers
Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of marine steam turbines and main boilers
Follow vessel security procedures
Manage firefighting and fire prevention activities on board a vessel
Observe personal safety and social responsibility
Operate survival craft and other lifesaving appliances
Prevent and fight fires on board a vessel
Provide first aid
Provide medical first aid on board a vessel
Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment

Students must have the following
Year 12 or equivalent
Prerequisite: Diploma of Maritime Operations (Engineer Watch keeper) (MAR50115)
Professional qualifications or Certificates of Competency in Marine Engineering can only be achieved via a definite pathway. Certificates are issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as per requirements laid down in Standards of Training, Certification of Watch keeping (STCW) convention of International Maritime Organization (IMO). These courses are only part of the prerequisites for the eligibility with AMSA for their oral examination prior to actual issuance of the Certificates of Competency. A student must also have specific and necessary training and sea-service before they are eligible for AMSA oral examinations. Students must apply for the AMSA "Eligibility Letter" once they receive a letter of offer from TAFE NSW.
Academic IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (iBT) 46 or Certificate III in Advanced English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent
