This course presents students with a unique opportunity to contribute to an emerging challenge that we all face - how to make our lives, livelihoods, communities, environments and spaces sustainable. To meet this challenge, society will need graduates with an awareness and understanding of disciplines from across environmental, social and economic domains. The environmental domain covers the water, air and soil and the biota that inhabit them, while the economic domain deals with the financial and managerial aspects of business and resource decisions. The social domain recognizes that people are both the cause of and solution to sustainability issues. Students will receive practical and theoretical guidance in a set of skills that are essential for solving problems: systems thinking, critical thinking, and decision-making, and will build personal attributes that will enable them to work in teams to generate new ideas, and new solutions. Studies will include an emphasis on field-based exercises and workplace learning. Course structure Students are required to complete 19 Core units and a Major, with three of the eight units from the Major already included in the Core program. Humanities and Arts Major Enables students to develop a firm foundation in historical, geographical, cultural and political knowledge, with sustainability as a central theme. Higher level units in this major include contemporary sustainable design practices and environmental humanities, in conjunction with an arts practicum that contextualizes this knowledge within a breadth of professional learning experiences. Learning Outcomes Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to work in a broad range of government and creative industries both locally and internationally. Analyze and communicate the pedagogical contributions of the Humanities and Arts to the challenges of sustainability. Demonstrate broad and coherent historical, geographical, cultural, indigenous and political knowledge considering relevant sustainability principles and global and international perspectives. Demonstrate initiative and judgment to contextualize design practices and environmental humanities in order to make sustainable decisions and solve problems. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for learning by reflecting and evaluating performance feedback to generate self-directed learning goals. Identify and sustainably solve problems relevant to the humanities using critical thinking and judgement. Review, analyze and synthesize knowledge in design, materials and the creative arts to contribute to sustainable societies.
