Equips students with skills in analysing, researching and explaining interactions between people and their environment.
The course is ideal for students with a humanities background who are interested in a career in psychology and related areas such as children studies, youth work, human services and justice.
Family and Child Support Major
Equips students with knowledge and skills of working in leadership positions with children, families and communities in a range of fields.
These fields include early education and care, family support, parent education and policy and service development. The major adopts the frameworks of human rights and social inclusion and includes a practical placement to enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practice and to develop professional networks in the field. The major can be combined with other related fields such as counselling, criminology and justice, psychology and youth work.
Course structure
Students will be required to complete the Core unit set. This will be supported by selection of a supplementary program, comprising of: a Double Major; or a Major plus a Minor/elective units; or a Minor plus elective units. The Major and Minor need to be from an Arts/Humanitarian field. Generally, units in this course should be completed in year sequence (e.g. all first-year units should be completed before proceeding to second-year units).

Practicum Requirement
This major includes one year-long professional placement that needs to be undertaken in the third year of study.
Attendance requirements
Students will be required to attend a placement at an approved workplace in accordance with practical placement guidelines. Students can nominate their agency of choice, but ultimate approval is granted by the practical placement coordinator in liaison with the host agency. Depending on the agency, students may be required to work outside of normal work hours which may include weekends and evenings.
Clearances and/or Risk Management Protocols Required
All students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check card (or equivalent if resident outside Western Australia, for example, a National Police Clearance) prior to commencement of practicum placement in the final year of study.
Professional practice rules
Professional placement requirements are governed by the codes of conduct of the Australian Community Workers Association and Early Childhood Australia.
