Learn about the design, deployment and maintenance of the infrastructure needed to generate and distribute electricity with a focus on the computing technologies used to operate modern industrial plants, and computer based measurement and control.
Course Description
Keeping the world connected in a digital age relies on reliable and efficient power supply, with increasing emphasis on computing technologies to monitor and control energy distribution. This course will prepare you for a range of career opportunities designing, maintaining and deploying the infrastructure needed to generate and distribute electricity around the world using both traditional and renewable energy sources.
You will cover both electrical power and industrial computer systems engineering to learn the skills you will need to work in both commercial and industrial sectors.
You’ll explore power systems engineering and learn how to effectively design and plan power transmission and distribution networks to increase reliability and stability of power supply, and develop models for an interconnected power system to analyse different fault conditions through load flow analysis. You’ll also learn about the effects of distributed generation such as rooftop photovoltaic, energy storage, and demand response on power delivery networks and cover advanced concepts associated with the planning and operation of power systems including load estimation and forecasting for sizing the components, voltage and frequency control, transient instability caused by fault events, optimal power flow, distributed networks, and design of advanced protection systems.
In Industrial Computer Systems Engineering, you’ll learn about the use and application of computing technologies in the operation of modern industrial plants, manufacturing processes and material processing industries, with a focus on computer-based measurement and control. You’ll learn how to design, commission and test complex industrial control systems and have the opportunity to design, commission and test small-scale systems involving programming, networking and interfacing to instruments, gain problem solving skills for computer based measurement and control systems using LabVIEW, and work on projects that explore the specification, design, commissioning and testing phases of typical systems development.
You will also gain hands-on experience and apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout your course in an Engineering Masters Project of industrial significance preparing you for a successful career energy supply, mining and processing, communications, electronics and computer systems, information technology, manufacturing, medical, and defence-related industries.

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor degree (AQF level 7) or equivalent. English Language Requirements: Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS): overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0; Test of English as a Foreign Language - IBT (TOEFL IBT): 73 with no band less than 18; Test of English as a Foreign Language - Paper Based (TOEFL - Paper Based): 534 (Test of Written English not less than 4.5); Cambridge Advanced English prior 52 with no section less than Borderline; Cambridge Advanced English after 69 overall with no band below 169 ; Occupational English Test (OET): OET with a minimum of C in the four components.

Recognised Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) in a relevant area. Normally applicants will also possess an appropriate level of industrial experience. Applicants without the necessary qualifications and/or background will be required to study additional units as part of the course requirements.
English Language requirements: IELTS overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0; CAE - 169 overall with no band below 169; PTE - 50 with no band below 50; TOEFL IBT - 73 with no band less than 18; OET - OET with a minimum of C in the four components.
