Course Description
The Doctor of Psychology is an intensive three and a half year professional research degree consisting of seminars, supervised practical work and applied research.
The first year of study is the same as Year 1 of the relevant Master of Applied Psychology (MAppPsych). Students who complete the first year of the Master of Applied Psychology with marks of distinction may apply for transfer to the DPsych. The specific purpose of the DPsych is to enable students to undertake applied Doctoral-level research on a topic of their choice which will make a distinct contribution to the profession whilst gaining skills in applied psychology to meet registration requirements, and to pursue specialised study in a professional area of their choice.
All the teaching staff is practising Applied Psychologists. Murdoch University has the Psychology Clinic, the Counselling Psychology Consulting Service and the Organisational Psychology Consulting Service to act as practical training facilities and community services. In addition, the University cooperates with Commonwealth and State Public Service Ministries and Departments such as Department for Community Development, Justice, Employment, Health, Safety and Welfare, Education, the Disability Services Commission and other public and private services and facilities in Western Australia.
In the first year, candidates will select units and practical placements to be approved by the School Committee.
Psychologists are emerging as highly employable professionals in contemporary health services given their strong grounding in effective interventions, solid assessment skills and their ability to devise and implement research.

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor degree (AQF level 7) or equivalent. English Language Requirements: Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS): overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0; Test of English as a Foreign Language - IBT (TOEFL IBT): 73 with no band less than 18; Test of English as a Foreign Language - Paper Based (TOEFL - Paper Based): 534 (Test of Written English not less than 4.5); Cambridge Advanced English prior 52 with no section less than Borderline; Cambridge Advanced English after 69 overall with no band below 169 ; Occupational English Test (OET): OET with a minimum of C in the four components.

Applicants for the DPsych are required to submit a research proposal and the name of a supervisor on the University staff with their application. Applicants will be required to present their research to a panel prior to admission. Applicants should hold a four year sequence of study in an APAC accredited program with the equivalent of a 2A honours degree in Psychology. Students with overseas qualifications need to ensure that their undergraduate qualifications are equivalent to a four-year APAC Accredited Australian degree in Psychology. Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study.
Applicants who hold the equivalent of the relevant APAC Accredited Master of Applied Organisational Psychology are to complete the balance of units in the DPsych. A maximum of 36 points of credit may be granted to those applicants who have completed equivalent coursework. The degree may be undertaken on a part-time basis but requires attendance of on-campus seminars and, for parts of the course, full-day attendance on campus or at a practicum site.
English Language requirements: IELTS overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0; Cambridge Advanced English prior to January 2015 (CAE): 52 with no section less than Borderline; CAE - 169 overall with no band below 169; PTE - 50 with no band below 50; TOEFL IBT - 73 with no band less than 18; TOEFL - Paper Based - 534 (Test of Written English not less than 4.5); OET - OET with a minimum of C in the four components.
