Prepares students for employment in a range of professions that cater to the changing needs of our media-saturated society.
Students are able to specialise in a particular media area and to develop superior skills in communication practice and innovative creative outputs.
Students acquire knowledge about the cultural impact of the media and gain critical insights into our local and globalised world to help them make a meaningful contribution to society.
Media and Cultural Studies
Prepares students for future success in our media-driven environment, and allows them to examine the influence and power of media, and the forces that affect them. The major introduces students to a significant range of contemporary theoretical and critical approaches used to analyse media texts, media technologies and their position in the world today. Students are trained to think critically and to communicate effectively.
Learning Outcomes
Collaborate in teams to produce presentations and lead knowledge-based discussions.
Communicate knowledge and defensible arguments regarding the interactions between the media, society and culture.
Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge with depth of the social and cultural context of media and communication practices, including contemporary theoretical and global perspectives, critical approaches to media analysis and the application of inter disciplinary and cross-cultural theories.
Demonstrate responsibility for own learning by independently reflecting on performance feedback and using evaluation to generate self-directed learning goals in their understandings of the relationship between the self and the media.
Initiate, investigate and consolidate research in an insightful way to analyse communication and cultural studies theories to resolve issues and make decisions relevant to media and society.
Research, review, critically analyse and synthesise information in a range of texts and practices to examine the influence and power of the media in a range of contexts from social, political and cultural perspectives.
Use critical thinking skills to inform decision-making and identify and solve contemporary problems in a range of media contexts using social, ethical and global perspectives.

Applicants must have obtained minimum of 24 points (minimum of 28 points for Law) consisting of aggregate from 3 higher level and 3 subsidiary level. English Language Requirements accepted: Academic IELTS: An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL: Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better; TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17; GCE O Levels: Grade C or better; PTE Academic: PTE Academic 52, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement; University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced]: Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test. Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169; or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 including TWE of 5.
