Planning studies is focused on improving the quality of life in our neighbourhoods, communities and society. Planners design for the future by improving human prospects in the face of rapid economic, environmental, political and technological changes. With this diploma, you’ll be introduced to situations common to planners where you’ll have to reconcile conflicting interests by finding common ground, then create innovative options and implement solutions.

Massey’s Diploma in Arts in planning studies has a strong focus on creating sustainable and resilient communities. You’ll learn about both urban and natural resource planning. You’ll also develop interpersonal, communication, ethical and conflict-resolution skills. These are essential for working in teams and interacting with people from diverse cultures, communities and backgrounds.

Your lecturers have extensive knowledge of planning in local and central government as well as in the private sector. They also teach on Massey’s Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning, which has maintained accreditation with the New Zealand Planning Institute for more than 35 years.

Central government (e.g. Ministry for the Environment, Department of Conservation, New Zealand Transport Agency)
You could also continue your study and pursue an accredited planning qualification, such as the Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Planning.
Requirements
The requirements for the Diploma in Arts endorsed in Classical Studies are:
Pass both:
230.111 Tū Kupu: Writing and Inquiry
230.112 Tū Arohae: Critical Thinking
Pass 75 credits in Planning Studies consisting of:
at least 45 credits at 200- and 300-level in Planning Studies including 132.221, from the Planning Studies schedule
30 credits at any level in Planning Studies
The remaining 15 credits for the Diploma in Arts can be from Part II of the schedule for the Bachelor of Arts degree (including further courses from the endorsement subject) and/or courses offered in other undergraduate degrees.

Applicants must have completed New Zealand secondary school qualification or other equivalent overseas qualification. English Language Requirements: IELTS score of 5.0 (no band less than 5.0). TOEFL iBT score of 61 overall (min 17 in Reading & Writing). PTE Academic score of 36 Overall (min 36 in communicative skills). Cambridge English score of 155.
