English Literature and Music bring together two of the most important forms of artistic expression. By studying English Literature and Music at Keele, you will develop as a critical thinker and a creative practitioner, and discover ways in which scholarly and creative approaches to these disciplines inform and enrich each other. In English Literature you will explore the significance of texts within their originating cultures, periods and genres as well as their continuing influence. You might consider the historical, socio-political, economic, gender and geographical contexts of fiction, poetry, drama and even film, from the medieval period to the present day. You will have the opportunity, if you wish, to develop your skills as a creative writer, and you can take modules in Film Studies.The Music strand of your degree will investigate music in a wide range of contexts. As well as focussing on the creation and performance of music, you’ll examine its meaning and uses in a diversity of styles, periods and traditions, through topics including history, aesthetics, music and narrative, and music’s social impact. You can also take a work placement module studying music in the community. Music at Keele is a hub of world-class musicologists, composers and performers, and the musical life on campus is rich and varied. An English Literature and Music degree will enable you to develop a wide range of skills that can be used in many different careers. Some careers may require further study or training, but you might work as a teacher, journalist, editor, librarian, advertising copywriter, or arts administrator. You could work in orchestras, bands, a recording company, publishing, game design, film, radio and television. Our graduates also go into careers in marketing, research, broadcasting, and publishing.
