During this course, you will study accountancy with a specialism in finance, exploring the design and use of accounting and financial systems and how they are affected by individuals, organisations, markets and society. The Finance modules are designed to help you better understand the theories leading to the design of financial institutions, the services they provide and the products they sell. The topics covered range from optimal portfolio creation and management, to project appraisals and financing, to risk management through the use of such derivatives such as options, futures and swaps. Drawing on economics, law, management, mathematics, statistics and IT, you will build your understanding of business strategy, behaviour and performance in the global context. Our computer laboratories, equipped with Bloomberg terminals and Sage accounting software, will enable you to interact with real-world data and situations. You can also choose to build on this practical experience by opting to take a placement year between years two and three of your studies. Our programme is recognised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), and can lead to a range of exciting careers in business as well as a number of exemptions from their professional exams. A high percentage of business leaders have finance backgrounds, and accounting has one of the highest graduate employment rates. With the increasing internationalisation of business and the capital markets, you will have extensive opportunities. You might work as a chartered accountant, chartered certified accountant, chartered public finance accountant or chartered management accountant. Or you might work as a commodities trader, stockbroker, management consultant, banker, financial or tax advisor or insurance broker, or go on to study at master’s or PhD level.
