Why study Zoology? Zoology is the study of animals and their origin, structure, physiology, characteristics, behaviour, development, ecology and distribution. It looks at animals that live on land, in the sea and in freshwater environments. You'll study individual animals down to the molecular level, as well as their populations and communities and the ways they interact with plants and the physical environment. Where can Zoology take me? Zoology prepares you for a career in a range of fields including conservation, park management, natural resource management, research and education. Our graduates work in zoos and wildlife reserves, museums, environmental consultancies, government agencies and non-government organizations such as Murrumbidgee Irrigation and the Trust for Nature. Further study options The Department of Zoology prides itself on offering Honours research projects that span the whole of zoological science, from ecology to animal physiology. Honours students develop unique expertise in a research area of their choice, as well as a range of valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers. Career outcomes The extent of climate change, the best medicines to treat cancer, the most effective ways to protect endangered animals and many other challenges all require answers from science. The Bachelor of Science gives you a broad, internationally recognized grounding to take up roles in government, defence, research, astronomy, meteorology, business, journalism, health care, teaching or management. Those with strong skills in mathematics, statistics, quantitative analysis and problem-solving are highly sought after in various areas, including banking, engineering, financial administration, insurance, and research and development. There is also a current shortage of qualified chemists and of science teachers, particularly in physical and mathematical sciences.
