Overview Few things are as rewarding as giving someone the ability to walk, stand or even just pick up a cup. Studying clinical prosthetics and orthotics gives you the ability to do just that. You'll learn about artificial limbs (prostheses) for people with amputations, and supportive devices (orthoses) for people with musculoskeletal weakness. This course offers practical experience, and is the only course of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region. Your clinical experience starts in first year with a half-day observational placement. In second year you’ll complete a one week observational placement, in third year you’ll work with volunteer clients in practical applications of prostheses and orthoses. In fourth year you'll do two clinical placements (14 weeks total) at a leading Australian or international hospital or private practice. During this time you'll gain experience with tasks including assisting in providing prosthetic and orthotic treatment while working directly with clients. This clinical discipline requires students to be hands-on. That's why we have clinical workshops allowing you to experiment with materials and equipment first hand. Our technical labs and clinical consulting rooms are of the highest standard. Study areas include clinical orthotics and prosthetics, where you learn to work with clients in a respectful manner. You'll work one-on-one with a diverse range of clients and learn how to assess, prescribe and plan treatment. You'll also learn about casting, cast modification, fabrication, fitting, alignment and evaluation of fit and function of several prosthetic and orthotic devices. The course structure lets you complete the required subjects for this 4.5 year degree in only four years. The qualification awarded on graduation is recognized in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9. Career outcomes Prosthetist - orthotists are integral members of healthcare teams. Graduates can find work in major hospitals, private prosthetic-orthotic facilities and other agencies. Graduates also have the skills to perform clinical, technical, advisory and educational roles. Graduates are eligible to work in many overseas locations once they meet national professional recognition or certification, e.g., Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) in the UK. Professional recognition Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics may be eligible to apply for membership with Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association (AOPA) and the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) Professional membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree.
