Why study botany? Through the study of plants and other organisms, as they relate to the environment, botanists have a significant impact on food security, the management of our forest resources, environmental conservation and sustainability. The demand for experts in botany continues to grow. With the changing climate, pressing conservation issues and the need for disease-resistant food sources, we need more people with a sophisticated understanding of plants and our relationship with them. Through a major in Botany, you will study the ecology, biochemistry, pathology, taxonomy and mycology of plants. In addition to botanical study we teach you broad skills including project design, data collection, data analysis and the preparation of reports. Where can botany take me? Botanists can be found working in labs and office, fields and farms, and parks and gardens. As a research scientist or conservationist you might find yourself working to conserve endangered species or advising policy-makers. If you focus on biotechnology you may be exploring genetic engineering, disease and drought resistance or pharmaceuticals. Our graduates are sought after by government organizations, parks and wildlife management groups and conservation organizations. They can also be found working in medical science, horticulture and agriculture. Further study options If you're an undergraduate with a strong academic record and an appropriate major, the Honours program in Ecology, Environment and Evolution with a specialization in Botany awaits. Your Honours year will give you the chance to combine coursework and research in a specialized area of study. Complete the Honours program with high grades to qualify for entry into the Masters by Research program or by direct entry into the PhD program.
