Why study Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is responsible for ground breaking discoveries in the past century with the consistent outcome of saving, lengthening and improving lives.
Studying biological processes - the changes that occur in living organisms - from a chemical perspective helps us to learn how cells communicate and multiply, how the brain functions and how disease develops and responds to chemicals.
You will learn how discoveries in biochemistry impact our understanding of health, nutrition and agriculture and have the capacity to greatly improve quality of life.
Where can Biochemistry take me?
You could find yourself working in drug and vaccine development, studying DNA and protein chemistry or even working in forensic science. Or you could pursue one of many other fields of biomedical research, molecular cell biology or biotechnology.
You may work locally or internationally for a research institution, university, hospital, government or corporate organization. The opportunities for biochemists continue to expand.
If you choose not to pursue research, our undergraduate science degree will teach you problem solving, creative thinking, report writing and many other transferable skills that will make you employable in a number of professions.
Further study options
If you're an undergraduate with a strong academic record and an appropriate major, the Honours program in Biochemistry awaits. Your Honours year will give you the chance to combine coursework and research in a specialized area of study. Complete the Honours program with high grades to qualify for entry into the Masters by Research program or by direct entry into the PhD program.

English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based Test - Overall score of 550 with 5 or better in TWE (Test of Written English); TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall 64 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing, Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): Overall score of 50 with no communicative skill score less than 50, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component.

Entry into a Bachelor Degree program at La Trobe University requires completion of Australian Year 12 with certain grade. Students from other countries should have country specific requirements equivalent to Australia.
Subject prerequisites
Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in English other than EAL; a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics.
