Overview
This degree delivers you a postgraduate qualification that combines the study of human movement with an understanding of how exercise is used for rehabilitation, disease management and injury prevention. You'll gain hands-on experience through at least 500 hours of clinical placement.
From an exercise science perspective, you'll investigate motor control, exercise physiology, biomechanics and anatomy. You'll gain an understanding of how to modify health behaviors in the community and how exercise programs can be used to optimize performance. You'll also learn how to work with groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities and athletes undergoing rehabilitation.
You'll explore how exercise is used to promote health and well-being, including the preventative and rehabilitative benefits of exercise for those with chronic illnesses or serious injuries.
Your clinical placements will teach you to develop and implement exercise, lifestyle and behavioral programs for people of all ages. This gives you with the clinical skills and confidence to make a genuine difference to the quality of people's lives.
The course structure lets you complete the required subjects for this 4.5 year degree in only four years.
The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.
Career outcomes
Accredited Exercise physiologists are specialists who use exercise interventions to condition clients for optimal health/performance and to treat patients with, or at elevated risk of developing, chronic illness or injury. The demand for accredited exercise physiologists is high, and expected to increase in future years, due to various factors including the ageing Australian population and an increased demand on the health care system due to chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Exercise Science and Master of Exercise Physiology is accredited at the levels of exercise science and exercise physiology by Exercise and Sports Science, Australia (ESSA), under the National University Course Accreditation Program. Graduates of the Bachelor of Exercise Science and Master of Exercise Physiology may apply for membership with ESSA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
