Why study Sociology?
Sociology is the study of human society and the interactions between individual and community. It's about the structural arrangements and cultural patterns that shape group behaviour at every level of social action and interaction, whether local, national or global.
A major in sociology will let you explore the forces that shape individual character, the interactions between individual and community, and the reasons societies cohere or disintegrate.
In first year you'll be introduced to basic concepts in a range of topics that focus on contemporary society and Australia in a global context.
In second and third years you can select from a broad range of subjects including culture, family, gender, relationships, emotions, work, health, ethnicity, religion, community, cities and inequality.
Where can Sociology take me?
Sociology prepares you for a career in a range of fields including education, immigration, human resources, community development, youth work, social research and market research.
Further study options
If you're an undergraduate with sociology major and a strong academic record, your Honours year awaits. Combine coursework and research in your specialized area of study.
Complete the Honours program with high grades to qualify for entry into the Masters by Research program or direct entry into the PhD program.

English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based Test - Overall score of 550 with 5 or better in TWE (Test of Written English); TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall 64 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing, Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): Overall score of 50 with no communicative skill score less than 50, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component.

Entry into a Bachelor Degree program at La Trobe University requires completion of Australian Year 12 with certain grade. Students from other countries should have country specific requirements equivalent to Australia.
Subject prerequisites
Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in any other English.
