专业简介
Environmental scientists have the skills to understand the causes of climate change and related environmental degradation and are also called on to help to manage and hopefully reverse these effects. Our graduates can potentially influence the direction of future government policy, change agricultural and business practice and provide solutions to global warming, biodiversity conservation concerns, water resourcing issues and environmental degradation problems.
Why study this degree?
Employers want the skills you will develop in the Bachelor of Science. A strong emphasis on research in both the laboratory and the field ensures you will acquire the fundamental skills of scientific investigation such as data collection and analysis, critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication. These skills are just what is needed in the flexible workplace of the 21st century.
With the environment at the centre of our political, economic and even cultural lives it is no surprise that Environmental Science is a popular Science Major. This three-year full-time program deals with all of the big picture issues facing the planet. In addition to three Science foundation courses (Introduction to Biological Sciences, Introduction to Physical Sciences and Data Analysis and Experimental Design) you will take eight courses from the Environmental Sciences discipline. These range from Animal Diversity to Natural Resources Management and Archaeology.
You will also be required to complete a Directed Science Research project which provides the opportunity for you to specialise in a particular area of interest and to develop additional fieldwork and problem-solving skills. This program provides an excellent pathway to postgraduate research opportunities, including a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Work Integrated Learning: as part of the Bachelor of Science degree you undertake a Science Internship. This is a six-week industry placement in an area of employment related to your studies, which can lead to valuable contacts and employment opportunities.
