Spanning every area of media activity the Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Journalism is an industry-focused program that will teach you the practical skills you need to succeed in the competitive world of journalism. As well as hands-on training in print, radio, television, video and online journalism you also learn about media theory plus your legal and ethical obligations as a media professional. Why study this degree? Completing the Journalism Major within the Bachelor of Arts enhances your skill set. Communications specialists are needed in many organisations, both private and governmental. If you want to embark on a media career, our journalism major provides the practical skills and theoretical background that will set you apart. The program covers all genres of news reporting. You also learn about the diverse theories and practices of journalism, including your legal and ethical obligations. As well as providing the practical skills and theoretical background needed to work in today’s media environment, you will be encouraged to think critically about the industry you have chosen to work in. This includes how the media, often known as the Fourth Estate, impacts on our political institutions, the legal system, personal freedom and other aspects of a modern, pluralist society. The Bachelor of Arts degree offers the flexibility for you to study a Second Major in another discipline such as Film & Screen Production, Environmental Science, Social Justice, Theatre Studies or History. You may also choose to study journalism as part of a double degree with a second degree from the School of Arts & Sciences and other Schools such as Law and Business. You can also complete this Major as part of the Bachelor of Communication & Media. Graduates find work as journalists, digital marketers, communication consultants, PR advisors, sports reporters, social media marketing specialists, media and communications advisors, events coordinators, campaign officers, research officers, photographers, editors, travel writers, videographers and freelance journalists.
