This program allows you to build a strong foundation in valuable professional skills such as writing, critical thinking, industry engagement, and practice and production. Develop industry-focused communication tactics by working with real organisations, gaining first-hand experience in strategic industry practice. Study a wide range of communication forms, including emerging media platforms and technologies, social media and mobile media. You will also have the opportunity to learn screen, audio and written communication forms. Major in Public Relations, Digital Media or both, and choose from a range of minors. This includes Advertising, Event Management, health Communication, Interaction Design, Journalism, Writing, Public Relations and Digital Media.
Majors
Digital Media
The Digital Media major offers a sequence of courses dealing with contemporary media practices, institutions and technologies. Students will learn a combination of critical analytic, research, production, management and planning skills related to contemporary media industries. The major is distinctive for its emphasis on a combination of critical perspectives, research and analytic frameworks, and content and platform management. The major prepares students to work in industry roles that require a combination of digital analytics, social engagement and content production skills. The major approaches media as technologies for orchestrating social, cultural and political life. Across the major courses focus on the continuous evolution of media technologies and industries, the interactive and data-driven platforms that now form the basis of everyday media infrastructure, significant domains of cultural production such as news and television, and the role media plays in the formation of identity.
Public Relations
This field provides students with the skills required in the profession and practice of public relations, which assists organisations in establishing and maintaining communication and cooperation with stakeholder groups. Students will learn the theories of public relations and communication, understand the importance of the management of stakeholder relationships and reputation, acquire skills in public opinion analysis, learn to identify and manage organisational issues, and develop a crisis management plan. The program also teaches the skills required to research, plan, and implement a strategic public relations campaign, from objectives, stakeholder identification, and strategies and tactics, to budgeting and evaluation. Students will gain an understanding of how globalisation and new media impacts public relations practices, and learn about the legal and ethical frameworks for the profession.
