Develop specialist knowledge in the environmental engineering fields of design, infrastructure planning, water engineering, sustainability, project management and transport engineering.
The Master of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) will develop advanced knowledge and skills in environmental engineering to enhance your career prospects in relevant industries.
You will develop specialist technical capabilities in:
water treatment engineering
water resource systems optimization
advanced technologies for wastewater reclamation infrastructure
urban hydrology
humanitarian engineering
You'll gain skills that will allow you to step up as a project leader, consultant or manager with the knowledge to lead the introduction of new technologies and operating practices in environmental engineering.
You'll also develop extensive knowledge in environmental engineering and related technologies combined with advanced oral and written communication, teamwork, design, project management and research skills. You will enhance your professional skills in management, leadership and business enterprise.
International student visa holders can only study full-time.
Program structure
The Master of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) consists of 192 credit points and will meet AQF level 9 Learning Outcome.
Career
Environmental engineers work on projects including environmental impact studies, energy conservation, sustainability, pollution control and humanitarian engineering.
There is a growing need to better understand and more effectively integrate the environmental factors that are part of modern living and environmental engineers will play an important role in achieving this balance.
Graduates of the Master of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) will be sought in Australia and overseas, mainly Southeast Asia and East Asia.
There is steady employment of environmental engineers in Australia in the water and hydrology sectors, construction, infrastructure and mining industries.
Further study
When you successfully complete this program, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Masters by Research or Doctoral (PhD) program.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours. The degree should include a research component comprised of a thesis, other research projects or research methodology courses that constitute at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent). The applicant must have achieved at least a distinction average in the final year; or a master degree that includes a research component comprised of at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent) with an overall distinction average or a master degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (Paper Based Test) score of 580 (TWE* 4.5); TOEFL (Internet Based Test – iBT): Overall score 92 with minimum of 20 in all sections; Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): 58 (no communication band less than 50); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

You must have successfully completed:
An Australian bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in engineering, engineering science or engineering technology with a major in civil engineering, environmental engineering or engineering systems (or international equivalent) with a GPA of at least 2.5 out of 4.0 (or equivalent). You may also be eligible for entry if you have a GPA below 2.5 (out of 4.0) and at least two years' current, relevant, work experience in industry.
OR
A Master of Engineering by coursework in any engineering discipline or equivalent.
English language requirements
To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 580 (TWE 4.5)
TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 92 (with minimum of 20 in all sections)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component
