We live in a data-driven world that’s generating huge volumes of information at ever increasing rates, via social media, financial transactions, telecommunications, and even scientific discovery.
Handling this big data is consequently a top priority for all of us, whether you’re in business, industry, government, or even individually, as citizens and consumers.
The emerging interdisciplinary field of data science combines areas of computer science with mathematical statistics and domain expertise to manage and analyze this data.
Though incorporating statistical methods, data science puts a greater emphasis on the specialized computational skills required to manage and analyze big data from sources such as social media, sensors, mobile and transaction data.
Data scientists develop the capability to derive insight and opportunity from the vast repositories of data that many organizations collect.
They help organizations in all sectors of the economy to make sense of these very large volumes of data; enabling businesses to gain a competitive edge, governments to deliver more targeted services, and research teams make new discoveries.
Data science and the analysis of big data could appeal to people from a whole range of backgrounds, such as graduates from computing, mathematics, science, engineering or health.
Despite sharing a number of courses with the Master of Analytics, the Master of Data Science has a significant core of both computer science and statistics.
Study mode
This program is delivered on-campus. You will learn through a broad mix of study modes including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, project work and seminars.
International student visa holders can only study full-time.

Organizations in all sectors of the economy - IT sector, business sector, science and engineering, government, medical - can gain a competitive edge by better managing and analyzing their data.
As data science is still a new and emerging field, the roles available for data scientists are consequently quite varied and diverse.
As well as the title of data scientist, other positions include analytics specialist, business intelligence analyst/developer, data analyst, data architect, data engineer, data miner, research scientist and web analyst.
RMIT is situated in Melbourne’s central business district, with the adjacent biomedical and knowledge precinct to the north - both areas being particular hubs for data science employment.
While industry expertise is at the heart of program delivery, studying at RMIT also means you are physically located close to Melbourne’s data professionals, with many opportunities for developing links to local industry and jobs, including meet-ups, events and seminars, as well as other networking occasions.
After being exposed to the latest theoretical and practical expertise, graduates of the Master of Data Science are expected to become influential leaders within their organizations.
Further study
When you successfully complete this program, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Masters by Research or Doctoral (PhD) program.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours. The degree should include a research component comprised of a thesis, other research projects or research methodology courses that constitute at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent). The applicant must have achieved at least a distinction average in the final year; or a master degree that includes a research component comprised of at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent) with an overall distinction average or a master degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (Paper Based Test) score of 580 (TWE* 4.5); TOEFL (Internet Based Test – iBT): Overall score 92 with minimum of 20 in all sections; Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): 58 (no communication band less than 50); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

An Australian bachelor degree in computing, science, engineering, health, or statistics with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4. 0, or equivalent.
You may also be considered if you have a minimum three years’ of current, relevant work experience or professional practice as a programmer, statistician or equivalent.
English language requirements
To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 580 (TWE 4.5)
TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 92 (with minimum of 20 in all sections)
