This intensive, skills-focused program offers a blend of practical and academic learning.
This program is designed to give you strong journalistic skills and an appreciation of what is required of journalists working in modern day journalism.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the journalism program’s newspaper, The City Journal, and its sister publication, City Journal Online. You will also be involved in presenting and producing live radio news and our live-to-air television news bulletin, Newsline, on Channel 31.
Strong links with industry are maintained through the program’s extensive work placement scheme, which offers you the chance to spend time in a newsroom. There are also limited opportunities to complete overseas work placements.
You will also learn to put modern practice into its legal, ethical and social context.
You will complete this program with the skills and knowledge necessary for an entry level position in journalism.
Electives and program structure
The program structure is provided in detail in the Handbook (program guide) below. The program offers the opportunity to present and produce live radio news, write for our City Journal publications and to produce live-to-air TV news bullet reports for Newsline on Channel 31. By participating in this program you will gain the vocational skills required to work in a variety of journalism and media roles and be skilled in the ethics and regulations of the industry.
Career
This program will qualify you to work across all platforms of journalism, including newspapers, magazines, online, radio and television journalism, and specialist publishing and corporate communications in Australia and overseas.
Digital technology advancements and the growing social media space are increasing the need for graduates who can adapt to, and cope with; a fast-paced environment and that have an understanding of how journalism will look in the future.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours. The degree should include a research component comprised of a thesis, other research projects or research methodology courses that constitute at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent). The applicant must have achieved at least a distinction average in the final year; or a master degree that includes a research component comprised of at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent) with an overall distinction average or a master degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (Paper Based Test) score of 580 (TWE* 4.5); TOEFL (Internet Based Test – iBT): Overall score 92 with minimum of 20 in all sections; Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): 58 (no communication band less than 50); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 7.0 (with no individual band below 6.5)
TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 600 (TWE 5.0)
TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 100 (with minimum of 24 in writing and 22 in all other sections)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 65 (with no communication band less than 58)
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 185 with no less than 176 in any component.
