Urban and regional planning is more than just creating physical environments - it’s a way of sustainably changing and shaping the world. Learn to understand the influences that affect the way we live, work, play and commute, and consider the many factors involved in creating sustainable and liveable cities and regions. This program is suitable for anyone with a passion for geography, urban design, history, economics, politics or environmental studies. While this program focuses on Melbourne and its surrounds, you will be introduced to planning practices across the world. You will be involved in many real-life projects with leading practitioners. International student visa holders can only study full-time. Electives and program structure Year 1 By studying Australian society, politics and economics you will better understand the foundations of urban and regional planning. You will also cover the origins and development of planning principles and practices. Year 2 You will focus on contemporary planning policies together with social science research methods, social planning, urban design and transport planning. Many students opt to study overseas for a semester in year 2. Year 3 You will specialize in different areas of practice: planning law, regional planning, climate change adaptation, urban economics, natural resource management and planning at local government level. Year 4 In your final year you will undertake a 60-day, paid work placement as well as study planning theory, planning research methods and structure planning. You will finish by writing either an individual thesis or a major professional report on a chosen topic.
