This program combines the essential elements of environmental science (understanding interactions in the environment) with environmental engineering (designing solutions to environmental problems). As a double degree graduate you will be uniquely placed to work in a variety of industries and roles, with a combined understanding of the science and the ability to design technical solutions. In your final year you will choose your minor study in environmental biology, environmental chemistry or groundwater engineering. International student visa holders can only study full-time. Multiple campuses Some Environmental Engineering laboratory classes will take place on the Bundoora campus. Electives and program structure Year 1 You'll concentrate on fundamentals in environmental science, chemistry, biology and engineering mathematics. Year 2 During second year, your environmental science studies will cover the hydrosphere, ecology and soil environment. Engineering Practice courses give you the opportunity to engage in a multidisciplinary project. Working in teams, you will learn about environmental principles and sustainable design. You’ll also start groundwater studies. Year 3 You'll learn about the atmosphere and start to study courses from your chosen minor of either environmental biology or environmental chemistry. You'll also gain a basic grounding in environmental engineering through studies in urban systems of water supply and pollution control. Geological site investigation studies also include the opportunity to undertake site visits. Year 4 In your fourth year, you will complete your minor studies in either environmental biology or environmental chemistry. You will further develop your understanding of urban water systems, economics, waste water treatments and land contamination. You'll also undertake an environmental engineering project. Year 5 Your final year will focus on advanced studies in environmental sampling and analysis as well as studies in ethics, policies and law. You'll also be prepared for the workforce through work-integrated learning opportunities, which are part of the Professional Scientist, Science Project and the Integrated Workplace Project courses. Career Graduates with environmental science and environmental engineering qualifications are highly sought after. RMIT’s emphasis on hands-on training and real-world experience ensures graduates are particularly employable. Graduates can work in corporate or industrial sectors or for government agencies. They can also work as consultants, designing innovative environmental products or resolving existing environmental problems using their environmental science and engineering skills. Further study When you successfully complete this program, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT postgraduate program or RMIT Masters by Research or Doctoral (PhD) program.
