专业简介
Chemical engineers apply biotechnology to make products on a large scale.
Chemical engineering brings together science, engineering practice and design. Biotechnology uses knowledge at the molecular level of living systems to devise strategies to solve important practical problems, such as controlling disease and making the environment safer.
These integrated skills can be applied to environmental management, agriculture and natural resource management, as well as a range of biological-based products and processes.
This double degree covers the application of chemical engineering and biotechnology methodologies and technologies for better management of the environment, in order to:
prevent, diagnose and cure disease
improve crop plants and livestock
detect pollutants and contaminants
use organisms to produce chemicals, including drugs, food and agrichemicals
International student visa holders can only study full-time.
Electives and program structure
You will develop fundamental knowledge of chemical engineering principles and learn to apply these to design sustainable processes and products for the benefit of society, environment, and businesses.
The program will give you a thorough understanding of biotechnology and equip you with skills in genetic engineering, industrial microbiology, molecular agriculture, bioinformatics, and regulatory, ethical and legal issues in biotechnology.
Design projects and practical experiences throughout the program allow you to apply your knowledge and skills.
In your final year the science and design project courses will give you the opportunity to either undertake work placement in industry or work on an industry-suggested project in a simulated work environment.
In Process Plant Design and Economics, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a week-in-industry program, where you’ll work closely with process engineers and learn the roles and responsibilities of professional engineers.
When you graduate, you’ll have the knowledge and skill to implement large-scale production of material produced through biotechnological processes.
Career
Graduates work in research, production and testing positions, with government and commercial industry.
Areas of employment include:
government departments (including CSIRO)
medical research institutes
hospitals
universities
secondary teaching
private industry
Further options include forensics and food processing.
Further study
When you successfully complete this program, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT postgraduate program or RMIT Masters by Research or Doctoral (PhD) program.
