If you have a mind for science and you’re keen to keep your options open, then the BSc is the degree for you. With many undergraduate majors in a wide range of subject areas, the BSc will allow you to incorporate different areas of interest and expertise. As well as strongly emphasising transferable skills to improve your employment opportunities, this programme will expose you to cutting-edge technologies and provide a gateway to independent research. Mathematics concerns the study of numbers, equations, functions, and geometric shapes and their relationships.
Subject overview
Mathematics has many faces. It can be challenging, powerful, fascinating, even mysterious - but above all it is useful. Mathematics makes essential contributions to the biological, information and physical sciences, economics, engineering and finance, but can also be applied to communications, linguistics and genetics.
Wherever problems need to be solved, mathematics has a role to play. For this reason, Mathematics is an excellent major in its own right, or as a second major or supporting subject for many other disciplines.

Applicants must have an appropriate undergraduate degree with a minimum average grade of ‘B’ or higher in the final-year prerequisite courses at a recognised institution. Consult faculty guidelines for the grades required. Other English Language Requirements accepted: overall score of 575 plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5 in Paper-based TOEFL; CAE score of 58 or higher, no individual language skill below borderline; CPE score of 45 or higher; PTE overall score of 65 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58; score of 85 in Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).

Secondary school qualifications
You need to have one of the following: International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects with at least a 'C' grade or higher. General Studies or similar general papers cannot be included.
GCE ‘A’ Level requirements apply to ‘A’ Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA, Pearson Education Limited and CIE taken outside of New Zealand.
IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.0 and no bands below 5.5; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 80 and a written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 550 and an Essay (TWE) of 4.5; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 169 and no bands below 162; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of C-; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 50 and no PTE Communicative score below 42; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 80.
