专业简介
It is expected that students completing this Major will understand the fundamental organisational and functional principles of the nervous system: from the biology of nerve cells and neural circuits through to neural systems and ultimately to complex behaviours like thought and emotion. From the two core subjects students will gain an overview of the breath of modern neuroscience to see how a spectrum of science disciplines (such as Cell and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Zoology and Anatomy) contribute to our understanding of nervous system function. This will also reveal how Neuroscience overlaps with related areas of study, such as Cognitive Science, Psychology and Medicine. Areas of study include how perceptual and motor systems are organised, the crucial role of the nervous system in the regulation of the internal environment of the body, how the nervous system develops, how it has evolved, and the effects of injury, disease and abuse.
How the brain works is both fascinating and baffling. And there is still so much yet to be discovered about these living computers. This major will give you an understanding of how the nervous system is organised and how it functions: from the biology of nerve cells and neural circuits through to neural systems and complex behaviours.
You'll also find out how modern neuroscience interacts with molecular and cell biology, physiology, psychology, and cognitive and information science. You can then take this knowledge and apply it to fields like drug development, behavioural research, brain imaging, or whatever other possibilities your brain can come up with.
Neuroscience is one of the largest areas of study within the sphere of modern biology and Australian neuroscience research has significant international impact.
Your major structure
This major can be completed through the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Biomedicine.
BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICINE
In your first year you will study 75 points of core subjects (usually six subjects) that most Biomedicine students will take to build an understanding of the structure and function of the body and consideration of the determinants of health and disease, including genetic and environmental influences. You will also undertake breadth studies.
In second year you will study 50 points of core subjects made up of two semester long subjects as well as elective subjects in biomedicine or science disciplines and breadth studies.
In your third year you will study 25 points (usually two subjects) of Biomedicine core subjects and 50 points (usually four subjects) that is deep and specialised study in neuroscience as well as other elective or breadth studies.
Career outcomes
After completing this major you might pursue career paths in drug development, basic research, drug evaluation, education, audiology, behavioural research and brain imaging.
