This major provides graduates with a depth and breadth of understanding in plant and soil science in the context of agricultural production systems. You will study subjects in soil biology and management, and plant health for growth and production. Students will also gain a detailed understanding of the drivers of plant industries and how management strategies can optimise yield and product quality.

Study the structure and function of plant production industries in Australia and around the world - including the determinants of production and their implications on land management.
And you'll gain an understanding of soil function and appropriate management plans to promote agricultural productivity and minimise environmental impacts.
You can choose to spend Semester 2 of your second year at Dookie campus, where you can observe a wide variety of farming industries first-hand including cropping, livestock and dairy management, horticulture and viticulture enterprises, as well as support industries such as irrigation management, logistics and food processing operations.
You can also choose to spend your final semester in the Plant and Soil Science major based at Dookie, where you can participate in an industry project, developing skills in project management, problem solving, planning and reporting scientific investigations.
Careers
The Plant and Soil Science major will equip you to address issues in plant health and sustainable agriculture, with subjects in ecology, water and soil management, plant growth and nutrition. It will provide you with a strong understanding of agronomy: the science of using plants for food, fuel, fibre, and land reclamation. Agronomy is fundamental to most fields of agriculture and leads to a range of careers.
INDUSTRIES AND ROLES
Following a major in Plant and Soil Science, potential careers include:
Agronomist: advise producers on maximising the usefulness of their land
Catchment manager or environmental advisor: improve sustainability and environmental health
Soil scientist: contribute to research, more efficient water use or advanced fertiliser development.
Orchard manager: develop budgets, work with marketers, supervise field teams and oversee the production line to deliver fresh fruit to market
Government policy adviser: apply your understanding of agriculture to help government balance programs, regulations and priorities.

To be eligible for entry to an undergraduate degree you must fulfill all of the following requirements: Complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an equivalent Australian or overseas qualification like Australian Year 12, Trinity College Foundation Studies, GCE 'A' Levels, International Baccalaureate. English language requirements: TOEFL - Paper based test - a score of 577 or more including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English. Internet based test - a score of 79 and scores of: Writing: 21, Speaking: 18, Reading: 13, Listening 13. IELTS (Academic) - an overall band score of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0. Pearson Test of English (Academic) - an overall score of between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50. Cambridge English: Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - A Cambridge English Score of 176 with no skill below 169.
