This major provides students with a detailed understanding of Immunology, the study of our immune system. The major describes how Immunology is studied and applied to a range of areas in the biomedical sciences. The major opens up careers in infectious diseases, diagnostics, molecular biology, biotechnology, vaccinology, biosafety and regulation as well as providing an avenue towards post-graduate research into infectious agents, their genes, underlying mechanisms of infectious disease and diseases associated with the immune system. It provides a basis for further study into medicine and other paramedical disciplines. Students intending to undertake this major should be aware that it requires successful completion of a practical-based subject in which products and reagents derived from animals are used. This major will teach you to acquire, analyse and apply information from multiple sources, both within and beyond the laboratory. It opens up careers in epidemiology, diagnostics, molecular biology, biotechnology, vaccinology, biosafety and regulation. The incidence of diseases associated with the immune system, such as allergies and autoimmune diseases is increasing and treatment and prevention of many infectious diseases is difficult due to the absence of effective vaccines. Immunology is a rapidly evolving science and new knowledge can be applied to the development and clinical use of new immune based therapies for cancer and infectious diseases, prevention of transplantation responses as well as allergies and autoimmune diseases. This major lays the foundation for further study in medicine and paramedical disciplines. It provides a pathway to graduate research into infectious agents, their genes, the underlying mechanisms of infectious diseases and diseases associated with the immune system. Your major structure This major can be completed through the Bachelor of Biomedicine or the Bachelor of Science. BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICINE In your first year you will study 75 points of core subjects (usually six subjects) that most Biomedicine students will take to build an understanding of the structure and function of the body and consideration of the determinants of health and disease, including genetic and environmental influences. You will also undertake breadth studies. In second year you will study 50 points of core subjects made up of two semester long subjects as well as elective subjects in biomedicine or science disciplines and breadth studies. In your third year you will study 25 points (usually two subjects) of Biomedicine core subjects and 50 points (usually four subjects) that is deep and specialised study in immunology as well as other elective or breadth studies.
