Programme overview
The Bachelor of Global Studies will shape you as an informed citizen who can make a difference in our increasingly globalised world.
This interdisciplinary programme will expand your mind as you are exposed to new ways of thinking about the world. As you gain competency in another language you’ll deepen your understanding of other cultures and perspectives.
You will develop skills for employment, such as leadership, teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, research and intercultural communication.
Programme structure
The Bachelor of Global Studies is a cross-faculty degree that draws on the combined expertise of the faculties of Arts, Business, Creative Arts and Industries, Engineering, Law and Science.
You will choose from one of four majors when you start the programme:
Global Environment and Sustainable Development
Global Politics and Human Rights
International Relations and Business
Transnational Cultures and Creative Practice
You will supplement your major with core courses in Global Studies, courses in a language, area studies in a region related to your chosen language, elective courses, and General Education.
You will have many opportunities to develop skills and experience through internships, workshops and research projects. We encourage you to spend time overseas during your study.
The broad structure of the programme is:
Three core courses (45 points)
Ten courses in your chosen major (150 points)
Four courses in a language (60 points)
Three courses in area studies (45 points)
Two General Education courses (30 points)
Two elective courses (30 points)

A Bachelor of Global Studies will prepare you for a range of exciting careers. With your combination of skills and your global knowledge, you will be well-prepared to make a difference in a variety of fields. You might go on to work in politics and government, the environmental sector, international development, foreign affairs, trade, defense or the arts.

Applicants must have an appropriate undergraduate degree with a minimum average grade of ‘B’ or higher in the final-year prerequisite courses at a recognised institution. Consult faculty guidelines for the grades required. Other English Language Requirements accepted: overall score of 575 plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5 in Paper-based TOEFL; CAE score of 58 or higher, no individual language skill below borderline; CPE score of 45 or higher; PTE overall score of 65 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58; score of 85 in Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).

You need to have one of the following:
International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects with at least a 'C' grade or higher. General Studies or similar general papers cannot be included.
GCE ‘A’ Level requirements apply to ‘A’ Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA, Pearson Education Limited and CIE taken outside of New Zealand.
IELTS: Overall score 6.5, Minimum band score: 6.0; TOEFL: Internet-based: Overall score 90, Writing score: 21; Paper-based: Overall score 575, Total Written Essay (TWE): 4.5; CAE or CPE: Overall score 176, Minimum band score: 169; FCertEAP: B-; PTE Academic: Overall Score 58; Minimum communicative skills score: 50; MELAB: 85
