All design degree students enrol in honours. Towards the end of third year, you decide whether you want to stick with the honours route, where your 4th year will be strongly research-led. The non-honours path is less research-focused and gives you room for more electives in 4th year. As a Massey design student, you will spend most of your time making and thinking in studios, workshops and media labs, whatever your major. There are many opportunities to explore other design fields through electives and cross-disciplinary collaboration is encouraged. There is also a focus on real world problem-solving and students in their 4th year have the opportunity to engage with live briefs and external clients. Push the boundaries Textiles span everything from design for fashion and interiors, to industrial products and gallery exhibitions; Massey sets you up for success by also teaching entrepreneurship, dynamic thinking, collaboration and innovation. What is it Like? Textile design has a great many possibilities including fashion, interior, or gallery outcomes. Students develop skills in colour, styling, texture, pattern, and surface application. They can specialise in print, dye, knit, weave, mixed media and non-woven textiles - the full range. Most importantly, we prepare students for the rapidly evolving world of work and business. We help students to develop their own research and design approaches, and push the boundaries of current textile practice, because highly skilled innovators will always have the edge. Massey provides an intellectual and creative environment, encouraging critical debate - so students are positioned to make their own choices about the design and manufacture of their textiles (eg sustainability, ethical production). We train students to create opportunities, to identify new concepts, and to participate in the global industry. Textile design research at Massey is particularly strong in adding value to New Zealand wool products, developing innovative ways to use textile waste, and sustainability. Staff regularly collaborate with industry to develop new fibre blends, and foster design innovation in manufacturing. As a result, we have excellent links with the textile industry nationally and internationally. These high quality collaborations evolve into connections for work experience, postgraduate study, and employment. Careers Graduates have pursued careers designing wall coverings, furnishings, apparel fabrics, art and design for films and theatre, secondary and tertiary education, consulting for color and lifestyle trend predictions, styling in marketing, and merchandising sectors of industry. Many graduates run their own businesses. Structure: The Bachelor of Design with Honours is the best preparation for becoming a well-rounded designer, whatever your chosen field of practice.
