All design degree students enrol in honours. Towards the end of third year, you decide whether you want to stick with the honours route, where your 4th year will be strongly research-led. The non-honours path is less research-focused and gives you room for more electives in 4th year. As a Massey design student, you will spend most of your time making and thinking in studios, workshops and media labs, whatever your major. There are many opportunities to explore other design fields through electives and cross-disciplinary collaboration is encouraged. There is also a focus on real world problem-solving and students in their 4th year have the opportunity to engage with live briefs and external clients. Massey's fashion design major has been the starting point for many successful fashion designers who now own or work in multi-million dollar fashion businesses. Studying design with an emphasis on fashion prepares you for a broad range of opportunities and roles in the creation and sale of apparel, or other design-related careers, locally and internationally. The Fashion Design major produces creative and innovative designers with a broadly-based design education; an interactive approach to apparel design, manufacturing technology, local and global fashion markets; and the ability to respond sensitively to socio-cultural and environmental issues. Degree level study of Fashion Design teaches innovative and creative design of apparel, skills in producing patterns and prototype garments, knowledge of textile materials, market and trend analysis, and helps you develop the ability to position fashion products in the marketplace. Careers Some of our graduates go on to develop their own labels, while others work in design, production, marketing, merchandising, and a wide range of other activities. Many of New Zealand’s fashion designers were educated at the Wellington School of Design, which has an excellent reputation for student success in design competitions. You can use the qualification as entry to fashion design and brand development in diverse areas, including high fashion, sports, corporate and other specialized clothing, buying and selling, display, costume for stage and film, production planning, quality assurance, materials sourcing, and specification development roles. You may also continue to postgraduate study and further develop your design abilities, knowledge, research interests, and skills. Structure: The Bachelor of Design with Honours is the best preparation for becoming a well-rounded designer, whatever your chosen field of practice.
