Want to teach your favourite secondary school subjects to a new generation of New Zealanders? The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching will give you practical techniques based on sound research to teach your curriculum subject(s) in secondary schools. This is a professional qualification with strong emphasis on practical experience and applied learning.
The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching includes taught papers, and 15 weeks of practicum placements in a secondary school, building your confidence and experience as a teacher in the classroom. During campus-based papers, you also need to attend curriculum studies tutorials in your teaching subjects.
A variety of assessment is used - from academic essays and research presentations to the professional application of learning in complex unit plans and blogs. Due to the professional nature of the qualification, you're expected to demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour at all times. This includes dress, punctuality and attendance.
Career opportunities
Student teachers who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching are eligible to seek registration as a teacher and apply for teaching positions in secondary schools.

A Tier 1 score in the National University Entrance Examination (Gaokao) at a recognised institution. English Language Requirements: IELTS score 6.0 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher; TOEFL iBT score 80; Minimum overall score of 52 in CAE prior to 2015 or a score of 169 in CAE from 2015; or a score of 50 in Pearson (PTE); or B/B+ in Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS); or grade B in GIE.

A bachelor’s degree in a subject considered relevant for teaching in a New Zealand secondary school. AUT will evaluate whether overseas qualifications meet the above entry requirements. An assessment of your overseas qualification by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) may be required for teacher registration and/or salary assessment purposes

Must meet the Education Council's Good Character and Fit to be a Teacher requirements. Applicants are required to make a declaration about any convictions, health and other issues that may affect their fitness to be a teacher.

English Language Requirements:
IELTS (Academic) 7.0 overall with all bands 7.0 or higher
Have a level 7 degree from a New Zealand or Australian university; or
Have two years of secondary schooling in New Zealand and UE literacy at level 2 NCEA with 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing.
TOEFL iBT score of 100; GIE with A grade; CAE minimum overall score of 185; PTE minimum overall score of 65.
