Develop knowledge in a specialised science discipline at undergraduate level or prepare yourself for anaesthetic training or further study to become a chiropractor. The Diploma in Applied Science has three pathways: Standard diploma, Anaesthetic Technology pathway and Pre-Chiropractic pathway. You can choose one of three common pathways: Standard diploma Anaesthetic Technology Pre-Chiropractic Standard diploma For this one-year qualification you need to complete eight papers from Year 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Science. Anaesthetic Technology pathway This three-year pathway (part-time only) provides trainee anaesthetic technicians with the skills to become registered anaesthetic technicians. All people working as trainee anaesthetic technicians or nurses must be registered as trainees and employed in a hospital that is a Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand recognised training facility. Pre-Chiropractic pathway This one-year diploma prepares you for the Bachelor of Chiropractic, taught through the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. The Pre-Chiropractic pathway within the Diploma in Applied Science is an opportunity to meet the entry requirements of the New Zealand Chiropractic College. Completing the diploma doesn’t guarantee entry to the Bachelor of Chiropractic. Career opportunities Standard diploma Graduates with this broad foundation in science are prepared for careers in science and laboratory work in a variety of industries. You can also progress to a higher level science qualification. Anaesthetic technology pathway Diploma papers provide the theory supporting the practice of anaesthetic technology, during three years of clinical training based in the hospital. Students must have a position as a trainee in a recognised training hospital to complete this diploma pathway, which leads to anaesthetic technician registration. Pre-chiropractic pathway This pathway prepares you for entry into chiropractic college and becoming a registered chiropractor.
