A proven pathway to further study or employment in media.
This programme provides a broad introduction to media in New Zealand to prepare you for the numerous opportunities that exist in this dynamic industry, or further study.
It covers the basics of visual, text and audio storytelling and how they relate to publishing across all platforms; writing; presenting; sound, video and story editing; videography and photography; website content production; radio production; and creative production of trailers and advertising.
You'll learn how to create and present content across multiple platforms; interview subjects; write headlines and captions; meet deadlines; work individually and in a team; and produce content for social media channels.
As part of the programme you'll benefit from our strong industry links making contacts with a range of media professionals and through presentations from people working in media, including producers, digital media managers, videographers and journalists.
Programme structure
To complete this Certificate you are required to complete a minimum total of 60 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The media industry is a dynamic and exciting industry to work in. This qualification is designed primarily as an introduction to possible higher-level study as well as the media industry. The industry and the roles within it are changing rapidly so graduates will have the skills required to work in entry level positions in media communications and related fields.
STUDY PATHWAYS
This programme provides a pathway into the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications with strands in radio, journalism and screen and television production. Other related further study options at Ara include web design and event management.

Academic requirements
Students are required to complete international qualifications equivalent to New Zealand NCEA qualification. Entry requirements vary from country to country.
Alternative requirements
Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Literacy and/or numeracy assessments are available and may be required.

TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 or higher (with a writing score of 18)
University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations - FCE with a pass at Grade B or CAE with a score of 52 (Cambridge English Scale 174-176)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 50
City & Guilds IESOL - B2 Communicator with a score of 66
