Learn how to help investors make good choices, navigate risk and achieve their financial goals.
This programme will equip you with the skills, knowledge and industry practices required to work as a personal financial planner with a high standard of professional proficiency and ethics.
Core subjects include accounting, business communication, commercial law, business heritage, culture and sustainability, marketing, computing, management and applied research. Compulsory courses include taxation, introduction to finance, personal financial planning, financial risk management and insurance, and advanced personal financial planning.
A broad range of elective courses will enrich your qualification in specialised areas, while a 200-hour, hands-on project within a real business environment will add to your expertise and ensure you're ready for employment as a professional personal financial planner.
Note. CFPCM is a registered certification mark and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERCM is a common law certification mark owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Institute of Financial Advisers is the marks licensing authority for the CFP Marks in New Zealand, through agreement with FPSB.
Please note that TANZ offers a selection of courses from the Bachelor of Applied Management, but not all courses required to complete the degree are currently available through fully online study.
Programme structure
To complete this Degree you are required to complete a minimum total of 360 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Upon successful completion of your degree you'll be equipped to work as an advice practitioner in the areas of financial planning, insurance, investment and estate planning.
You'll possess the skills and expertise required to work as a specialist in personal financial planning within a variety of financial, insurance and legal service institutions, or as a self-managed business practitioner specialising in personal financial planning.
STUDY PATHWAYS
Your Bachelor of Applied Management in Personal Financial Planning provides the pathway to full membership of Institute of Financial Advisers and provides the academic pre-requisite to apply to become a CFPCM CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER CM.

Students are required to complete international qualifications equivalent to New Zealand NCEA Level 3 (Year 13). Entry requirements vary from country to country.
Note: Students who have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (eg International Baccalaureate, Cambridge examination) should contact us for requirements.
Alternative requirements
Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.
