Indigenous cultures and histories draws on a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, archaeology, history and heritage studies. You will learn about indigenous peoples, their way of life, their past and the processes we use to uncover that past. You'll discover the origins and transformation of Australia's 600 indigenous groups that date back 50,000 years.
You will develop a sound knowledge of key issues in indigenous societies, including the following: ongoing relationship between indigenous and settler Australians; points of contestation and how this has shaped the position of indigenous and non-indigenous Australians in contemporary society; understanding indigenous relationships to each other and to the land.
Graduates can look forward to many exciting career opportunities. You could channel your expertise into public policy and government positions, the not-for-profit sector, or working with Aboriginal-controlled organisations (such as land councils and native-title organisations).
