History studies examine ways to interpret and understand the past. History reaches broadly into different aspects of the human experience and considers societies and civilisations across a range of periods and continents. By considering the past, you will be better placed to understand the current shape of societies and states across the globe, and issues facing individuals and social groups. Our History program is one of the largest in Australia and has an outstanding international reputation. You will have the opportunity to study across several historical fields and our lecturers are experts in American, Asian, Australian, European, Global, and Medieval and Renaissance histories. Start of expanded content One of the things that makes History at Monash an exceptional choice is the range of options that we offer. Our core units give you a solid grounding in early and modern history, from the big bang to climate change, and focus on key periods – Medieval, Renaissance, Revolutionary times, Twentieth Century and others. You can pursue a particular stream of history, chosen from American, Asian, Australian, European, Global or Medieval Renaissance history, or mix your electives to meet your own needs. You will learn how history is applied in the 'real world', including the digital world. You will research, analyse, critique and write – all valued skills in many rewarding job sectors. Whether in government work or the private sector, employers value the skills provided by a Monash Arts degree. As a Monash student, you have the option to make your course an international one, and you can choose to study in Malaysia, South Africa or Italy. At our centre in Prato, Italy, you can undertake intensive units in Renaissance studies, or even Australians in the Great War, combining field trips to Turkey and France. Alternatively, you can undertake an exchange at a partner university, or study abroad at a university of your choice. You choose where you want to go and we'll help you get there.
