Our program teaches language, linguistics and literature, and their relation to culture and society. The Language department is highly regarded for its international links: immerse yourself in some of the most vibrant cities in Europe on our exchange programs, and gain credits towards your degree. Start of expanded content Our German studies program has three entry points, from introductory level to near-native competence. We test applicants with some German language to ensure you're in the right class. After your first year, elective units let you diversify and hone your skills in German literature and culture, media studies and German linguistics. Research, writing and analytical skills gained here are transferable to many disciplines and careers. Studying a language gives you more than the language. It offers you the unique opportunity to truly learn intercultural communication and to think broadly as you learn first hand about linguistic and cultural differences. It will challenge you to learn more about your own language and culture. In choosing German studies, you gain access to a rich cultural history and prolific contemporary cultural production, including areas such as literature, philosophy, music and the visual arts, and you will be taught by talented and experienced native speakers. We use music, film, popular media and literature to keep our teaching current, relevant and engaging. We have exchange programs with leading German and Austrian universities, and encourage you to take this invaluable opportunity to study overseas as part of your major. You can replace language units with equivalent overseas language-study units. Grants may be available through Monash Abroad and the German Government. Undertaking an extended major will provide greater focus and enhance your career opportunities.
