They will introduce you to technical legal topics and help you to understand the ways that law shapes society. If you choose to do so, you can, from your second year, opt to specialise in one of our three pathways, after which you will be awarded a named degree: Criminal Law and Justice Commercial Law Human Rights Law The pathways enable you to pursue your own interests and specialise from an early point in your studies and the in-depth knowledge youll gain will help you stand out from the crowd when applying for graduate roles. Practical experience is integral to this degree and you can take part in initiatives such as our newly-launched Law Clinic which gives you real-world experience providing free legal advice to members of the local community. Our Miscarriages of Justice Project gives you the chance to work on real criminal cases alongside practising lawyers as they support prisoners who maintain their innocence and have exhausted their appeal rights. Through the Street Law project you can gain experience in schools and organisations, advising and supporting them on specific areas of law. If you would like to see how law impacts on countries around the world, you can opt for Study Abroad - extending your degree to four years and spending your third year with one of our highly-regarded partner universities in the US, Europe, Canada and Australia. If you wish to extend your range of experience, you can pursue a Placement Year option with paid experience working in business (taking your degree to four years). Alongside your studies you can also take up a volunteering opportunity with the Citizens Advice Bureau or Lancashire Constabulary's Special Constables via Lancaster Universitys Student Union. Your Law degree can be the first step towards a career as a solicitor or barrister but Law graduates are also in demand beyond the legal profession. Roles you may consider include: legal recruitment consultant, chartered company secretary, compliance officer, investment banker, and many more. At Lancaster, you will develop the skills required to negotiate competently, work effectively in a team, speak in public and be confident when presenting information in a variety of formats - all are highly prized by employers. Many of our graduates choose further study (Legal Practice Course, Bar Professional Training Course, LLM and MSc programmes) or enrol in graduate training schemes with HMRC, the Civil Service, and the Crown Prosecution Service. You will have the opportunity to spend Year 3 on placement with a public, private or voluntary organisation in the UK or overseas. This experience will boost your employment prospects and will help you to decide on your career direction and the kind of organisation in which you want to work once you graduate. You will be doing a real, responsible job with all the satisfaction that brings. Our Placements Team will support you in finding and applying for a suitable placement that will support your professional development. Applying for a placement is a competitive process and the preparatory modules you will complete in years one and two are designed to give you the best chance of success in your placement applications. You will also be provided with dedicated workshops, 1:1 appointments with careers professionals as well as opportunities to speak with employers here on campus.
