In this course you will gain a deeper understanding of our primary communication tool – language. You will learn about the mechanics of language, the relationship between language and thinking, and explore the complex relationship between language and society. In addition, you’ll develop analytical skills to address a range of communication problems. These courses will open up many potential career opportunities that require the knowledge and skills of both a modern language and a deep understanding of language, culture and communication. Studying Linguistics together with a modern language gives you the chance to apply your linguistics knowledge and skills to strengthen your fluency in your chosen language. Assessment will normally take the form of 50% coursework and 50% examination. Applied Linguistics is relevant to a range of exciting careers including international business, management and consulting, public relations and human resources, diplomatic service, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and aid agencies, education – teaching and research, healthcare and medical companies, manufacturing industries, editing and publishing, public sector organisations and university international offices.
