专业简介
Geologists use knowledge and skills about geological processes and their influence on human activities to maintain resource output and minimise damage to the environment. Geologists gather and interpret data about the composition of Earth and its resources and the processes that have impacted, moulded and continue to influence Earth systems.
Geology will prepare you for a career in mining, exploration and rehabilitation, with government agencies and departments at all levels, and in research organisations and consultancy companies.
Studying geology at UOW includes fieldwork, practical experience and research that takes advantage of the mineral, rock and fossil collections and using our new Sciences Teaching Facility that includes spatial science facilities, dating and geochemical facilities, microscopes and field, drilling and coring equipment. Wollongong has a diverse range of geological features, outcrops and vast landscapes to ensure you get the best possible experience in fieldwork.
What you will study
In your first year, you will study a range of core subjects that will give you a broad understanding of the Earth’s structure and dynamic surface, and how different spheres are interconnected while developing applied skills in modelling and geospatial analysis. In years two and three, you will study a range of core subjects to gain more detailed knowledge and develop practical skills across the following areas:
Earth’s history and past environments
Plate tectonics and structural geology
Igneous and metamorphic processes
Mineral resources, exploration and environmental remediation
Sedimentology, stratigraphy and fossils
Geochemistry, geochronology and geophysical techniques
Geospatial analysis
Field mapping.
Major Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this major students will be able to:
Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and understanding of the trends, processes and impacts that shape the Earth and its environment including local, national, global, cultural, Indigenous and spatial perspectives.
Critically evaluate information and data to assess scientific methods and frameworks in geological sciences.
Develop hypotheses and experiments to test against evidence-based scientific facts, laws, principles and evidence.
Identify and articulate real world problems derived from the geological sciences.
Apply knowledge and appropriate techniques, including those associated with fieldwork, to evaluate possible solutions to real world problems and defend choice of solution against alternatives.
Locate, synthesise and evaluate data, information, results and literature pertaining to geological sciences using appropriate methods, measurements, tools and technologies.
Communicate geological perspectives and knowledge effectively to a range of audiences using appropriate technologies and communication skills.
Demonstrate ethical, professional, public and personal conduct and capacity to reflect on and direct own learning and practice and participate constructively in decision-making within the context of geological science.
