The rapid development of medical technology and treatments has created a niche sector which relies on the skill sets of mathematicians and statisticians. Mathematical and statistical modelling and analysis is the key to future breakthroughs in areas including the understanding of biological systems, the treatment of diseases, drug development, and targeted clinical trials. This is because mathematics and statistics enable us to design meaningful yet streamlined experiments, find structure in data, and construct models that help to predict, and therefore control, future outcomes. This degree The Bachelor of Medical Mathematics was created by UOW in response to the needs identified by the medical and health sectors. You will be able to pursue careers in mathematics, statistics and medical research and you will be prepared for postgraduate studies in medicine, mathematics, allied health professions and medical organisations. These include hospitals, CSIRO, Australian Bureau of Statistics, forensic research and universities. Other opportunities include summer scholarships and undergraduate research projects with academic staff, access to programs of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and inter-university courses via our Access Grid Room. What you will study The Bachelor of Medical Mathematics provides the tools and develops the skills required for advanced modelling and analysis in the medical and health sciences sector. The program includes a combination of mathematics, statistics, chemistry, biosciences, population health, medical imaging, physiology and psychology. You will gain the skills needed to pursue careers in mathematics, statistics, medical research and industry, in areas such as genetics, epidemiology, medical imaging, drug delivery, neurophysiology, and pharmacokinetics. Course Learning Outcomes Students graduating from the Bachelor of Medical Mathematics will be able to: Demonstrate a coherent core understanding of the fundamentals of both the mathematical and statistical disciplines; Exhibit depth and breadth of knowledge in one or more of the discipline areas of applied mathematics and statistics; Integrate knowledge derived from the medical, biological, physical and behavioural sciences; Investigate, solve and critically interpret practical and/or abstract problems using mathematical and/or statistical methods, including appropriate software tools; Appropriately communicate mathematical and/or statistical reasoning and conclusions to different audiences, using various delivery modes; and Apply professional, social and ethical approaches in learning to extend existing knowledge and work effectively and responsibly as an individual or in a team context.
