Explore your passion for people If you’re interested in the welfare and wellbeing of people, the Bachelor of Human Services (Counseling) will give you the skills you need to make a difference in the lives of people in your community. You will be taught by experienced counselors delivering course content with a practical focus to provide you with a solid foundation to work in a variety of community settings and organizations. Throughout this major you will learn specific communication and counseling skills, understand the theory and issues involved in counseling and explore various strategies provided to address common issues and mental wellbeing. The Honours component of this degree involves completing a research project on a topic of choice under the supervision of a staff member. The Honours program can also provide further exposure and industry experience, preparing you for an exciting career in the human services industry. Professional accreditation USQ is currently seeking accreditation with the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA). If you successfully complete 400 hours of professional placement you will be eligible for ACWA accreditation. If you don’t wish to undertake the three professional placement courses you can complete three other approved courses. Graduates of the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) who have completed all eight units within Counseling major who have successfully completed one counseling field placement will be eligible for Level 1 membership with the Australian Counseling Association. It's necessary to have attended certain residential schools if you are aiming to become a professional counselor and/or join professional counseling associations. Career outcomes Our graduates will be equipped to gain employment as a counselor or support worker in community settings, government and non-government organizations such as schools and industries.
