The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education) provides a qualification for those who wish to teach students in Years 7 to 12 in the government, Catholic and independent school sectors. The course will be suitable for those looking to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. This course aims to develop graduates who have critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and who are responsive in meeting the needs of 21st-century learners. Teaching practice School experience forms a significant part of the degree. You will work in schools in various capacities and for varying lengths of time throughout the program. There are opportunities to undertake professional experience placements in rural and/or remote areas, interstate or overseas. The final term-long internship (generally 10 weeks in duration) will see you having the major responsibility for a class, under the supervision of a mentor teacher. Core education The core education units comprise the bulk of the course and are taken throughout the four years. You will cover areas such as planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences and programs; the curriculum learning areas; classroom management and teaching strategies; theories of learning; Indigenous education; and teaching children with diverse learning needs. There is a strong emphasis on creating and nurturing an inquiry approach and analytic and critical thinking. Curriculum area specialisation You will specialise in either one or two Secondary school curriculum areas, and the units providing this specialist discipline knowledge will be undertaken outside the School of Education. You will learn the most up-to-date content for your chosen curriculum area/s because it is delivered by active researchers and highly regarded academics specialising in those subjects. You will choose a major secondary teaching area as well as a second teaching specialisation.
