Historians examine past social and cultural conditions to gain intimate knowledge about humanity. JCU specialises in the history of northern Queensland and has extensive historical collections. You will learn about both Australian and world history.
The program is highly flexible. You can combine core subjects from arts and humanities with electives from, for example, Literature, Politics and International Relations, Indigenous Australian Studies or Science. For additional expertise, you can combine this major with a second major. Popular combinations for History include Archaeology, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology.

Study political and economic events, as well as environmental and cultural change over time.
At James Cook University the Bachelor of Arts majoring in History allows you to focus on northern Queensland. To facilitate this, the University’s Eddie Koiki Mabo Library has an extensive collection of photographs, oral history and rare books. For you this means a wealth of knowledge is literally at your fingertips – this is an indispensable learning tool and a great resource for budding historians.
Career opportunities
JCU’s Bachelor of Arts majoring in History is a stepping stone to many interesting careers. You’ll have skills and insights for careers that demand high levels of research and communication, including critical reasoning and analysis and excellent writing and research skills.
You will develop the ability to construct an argument and communicate findings in a clear and persuasive manner, and the skills to discuss ideas, negotiate and summarise effectively.
Historians work for many organisations in roles that include research officer, heritage officer, records manager or information officer. They also work as independent consultants to research and write histories, and conduct oral history projects for organisations such as councils or schools.
With further study you can gain qualifications to become a university or high-school teacher, archivist, librarian, museum or gallery conservator, or heritage consultant.
Graduates are eligible to join Professional Historians Australia (Qld).
Pathway into course:
On successful completion of the Diploma of Higher Education you may be eligible to continue into this degree, and you may be able to receive some credit for successfully completed subjects.

Applicants who are applying for Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Information Technology requires 80%; 85% for Bachelor of Science (non-IT disciplines) and Bachelor of Engineering; 80% for Bachelor of Arts. Entry into health disciplines requires successful completion of one year or more of full-time tertiary study. English Language Requirements: Academic IELTS: 6.0 (no component lower than 6.0); TOEFL (paper based): 550 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 4.5); TOEFL (internet-based): 79 (minimum writing score of 19); Pearson (PTE Academic): 57.
