The Bachelor of Social Work with Honours (UNSW BSW Hons) offers you an innovative and accredited program leading to eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). The UNSW BSW Hons includes studies in the areas of social work practice, social and behavioural sciences, and contextual studies. The program includes a number of courses aimed at the development of research skills, including research design and methodology, and every student completes a piece of independent or directed research as part of the Honours requirement.
The UNSW BSW Hons draws on the extensive expertise and experience of qualified Social Work practitioners to deliver a unique combination of scholarly and practise-based courses. Students also undertake two separate field placements in Years 3 and 4 of the degree to gain the necessary practical experience.
Duration/Award
The program is a 6.5 years full-time program leading to the award of the two degrees of Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws BSW(Hons) LLB.

Social Work (Honours)
Critically analyse and synthesise knowledge, values and power relations, and apply reflective thinking skills to inform professional judgement and practice.
Articulate the principles of culturally responsive and inclusive practice, recognising the complexity of personal, social and cultural identity.
Assess and analyse needs to inform practice including demonstrating capacity for systematic inquiry and ability to conduct a professional project or piece of research.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing, demonstrating capacity for establishing respectful and accountable relationships with diverse people
Recognise the moral and legal rights of individuals, groups and communities and manage ethical dilemmas and issues arising in social work practice consistent with social work values and ethical practice.
Demonstrate capacity to receive and use supervision to enhance practice, and exhibit commitment to own professional development, attitudes and behaviour.
Practice collaborative team work, demonstrating understanding of group dynamics as they apply to teamwork
Formulate written records in accordance with ethical principles and demonstrate understanding of privacy and other legal parameters
Apply social work and other relevant theories and concepts and demonstrate high level systemic thinking within a human rights and social justice framework.
Law
Interpret and analyse statutes, for example: Navigating and applying statutory enactments in accordance with contemporary modes of statutory interpretation; Applying knowledge of the difference between interpretation of statutes and constitutions; Applying knowledge and ability to use extrinsic materials in the interpretation of statutes; Developing a coherent body of knowledge and skills about the rules of statutory interpretation; The application of statutory interpretation techniques in the context of problem-solving to generate appropriate analytical responses to statutory issues; Analysing the relationship between statutory interpretation and human rights instruments in different jurisdictions.
Demonstrate and adopt professional and ethical dispositions and values, for example: Professional disposition and values; Developing ability to exercise professional judgment; Ability to reflect on professional responsibilities of lawyers in promoting justice; Understanding the law's role in serving society; Understanding the value of community engagement; Ethical practice; Understanding of ethical approaches to decision-making; Developing ability to respond to ethical issues arising in legal practice;
