The Master of Mental Health is designed for applicants with an approved degree and relevant work experience. There are several ways of meeting admission requirements – see Program Details for more information. Complete courses that will build and extend your knowledge and skills in mental health practice. Throughout the program, you'll also spend 800 hours in an appropriate practice environment, which can include your current workplace. Choose to specialise in Art Therapy or Psychotherapy. If you'd prefer a generalist qualification, you can choose to study a mix of courses in the 'Standard' field. For full details on all of your study options, see the Fields of Study tab. Many of our lecturers have national or international reputations for their scholarship and professional practice, which they have incorporated into the program. Fields of study Art Therapy Art Therapy uses a combination of art activities and verbal interaction to support mental health by creating a positive environment for people and groups to express themselves through art. It draws on a range of psychological theories, concepts about creativity, and contemporary therapeutic approaches and methods. In this stream, you'll learn about the theory of art therapy and mental health, participate in experiential art therapy workshops, and undertake 400 hours of supervised clinical placements. This field is only available to internal (on campus) students. Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is the use of psychological techniques – such as talking through issues and modifying behaviours – to help treat disorders of the mind or personality, and/or improve a person’s mental health and wellbeing. In this field of study, you'll receive advanced training in the use of psychotherapy techniques, with particular emphasis on psychodynamic and/or cognitive behaviour techniques. Courses focus on the application of specific psychotherapy techniques to particular populations, and on the treatment of specific forms of psychopathology. You'll also complete 400 hours of psychotherapy practice during your studies. Standard The Standard field of study lets you to choose a range of courses from different streams to earn a more generalist qualification. No field of study will be listed on your tetramer.
