Undertake TESOL as a professional development program for experienced teachers of English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language. Research and project options are available, particularly if you're wishing to pursue a higher degree. Fields of study Applied Linguistics Linguistics is the scientific study of language – form, meaning and context – and covers phonology (how words sound, or are pronounced), morphology (patterns of word formation), syntax (patterns of sentence and phrase formation), and semantics (what words mean). In this field of study you will learn about linguistic theory and practice in targeted areas of language teaching, technology, and sociolinguistics/intercultural issues. You’ll also learn how to apply your knowledge to professional and practical tasks in teaching and other spheres, as well as understand the principal directions in current linguistics thinking and how it applies in the field. TESOL Studies TESOL Studies is intended as a professional development field of study for experienced teachers of English with at least one year’s language-related teaching experience. As a student in this field of study, you'll receive a thorough grounding in TESOL theory and practice, across the linguistic, psychological, educational and socio-cultural aspects of learning. You’ll also learn how to teach English in second- and foreign-language settings. Core courses cover TESOL teaching and curriculum, computer-enhanced language learning, and language structure. There is also a range of electives in language teaching and learning. Career outcomes The Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics is usually undertaken for professional development reasons career progression and advancing or updating knowledge of a particular field. Graduates are equipped with key advanced abilities in either Applied Linguistics or TESOL Studies, and have a better understanding of themselves as language professionals.
