Animal welfare
Project areas researching in those areas include:
Welfare of live animal export shipments
Welfare of animal shelter cats and dogs
Welfare of zoo animals: Professor Clive Phillips,
Alternative delivery systems for analgesia in cattle
Determining desexing status in dogs surrendered to animal shelters
Livestock production, health, reproduction and genetics
The School is an international leader in research on subtropical cattle production and health. Project areas include:
Reproductive performance in extensively farmed cattle
Respiratory disease in feedlot cattle
Contraceptive vaccines for cattle
Cattle sperm quality
Cattle genetics, including diagnosis of inherited diseases
Bone metabolism and increasing skeletal growth in cattle
Reviewing diagnostic technologies for monitoring animal health
Calf diarrhoea
Treatment of mastitis in lactating dairy cows
Lameness in dairy cows
Probiotics in livestock using animal nutrition studies and metagenomics
Equine health and production
The School has well-established strengths in equine health and production. Project areas researching in those areas include:
Laminitis in horses
Training programs to prevent injury in racehorses
Improved techniques for imaging of infection in horses
Attitudes to Hendra vaccination
Wildlife health and ecology
The School has strengths in marine and terrestrial wildlife research, many in collaboration with other UQ schools, industry or government organisations. Project areas include:
Marine mammals, including acoustic behaviour and population ecology
Diseases of dugongs and marine turtles
Wildlife phylogeography and conservation genetics
Koala health and disease
Using stem cells to treat wildlife diseases
Companion animals, including exotic pets
Companion animal research is a well-established strength of the School. Project areas researching in those areas include:
Obesity of cats and dogs
Feline and canine diabetes
Animal shelter medicine, including prevention of unwanted and problem pets
Pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in cats and dogs
Inherited diseases of dogs and cats
Stem cells to treat osteoarthritis in dogs
Corneal disease in dogs
Pharmacokinetics of opioids, anti-inflammatory and cardiac drugs in dogs and horses
Infectious diseases
The School is active in research on infectious diseases caused by parasites, bacteria and viruses. Our focus is on diagnosis, treatment and control of infectious diseases and investigating the intersect between human and animal diseases. Project areas include:
Anthelmintic resistance in parasites of dogs, sheep and horses
Susceptibility of fleas to insecticides
Epidemiology and control of diseases of livestock in developing countries
Emerging zoonosis in developing countries
Equine encephalitis viruses
Food-borne zoonotic bacteria in cattle
Antibiotic resistance in bacteria of companion animals, pigs and poultry
Canine angiostrongyliasis
Schistosomiasis in developing countries
Equine cyathostomin species diversity

Applicants must have a Bachelor degree or equivalent with a GPA of at least 4.50 on a 7 point scale and four years full-time work experience post-graduation including at least two of the four years full-time work experience gained while working in a dedicated supervisory/management role as approved by the Executive Dean; OR Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from UQ or equivalent with a GPA of at least 4.50 on a 7 point scale. International applicants must complete the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) with a minimum score of 550. English language requirements: IELTS: Overall Band Score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6 in each sub-band of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening; or TOEFL (Internet-Based-iBT): Overall score 87 with a Writing score of 21 and Reading, Speaking and Listening scores of 19; or TOEFL (Paper-based): Overall score of 570 and a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) and 54 in Listening and Reading; or PTE: Overall score of 64 with 60 in each communicative skills section; or CAE/CPE: Overall Cambridge English Scale (CES) score of 176 with a minimum score of 169 in each skill; or BEP: A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills.

Applicants must have
A bachelor’s degree with honours class IIA or better from approved universities, which should include a relevant research component.
A research master’s degree
A coursework master’s degree and an overall GPA (grade point average) equivalent to 5.65 on the 7-point UQ scale, which should include a relevant research component.
A postgraduate degree of at least one year full-time equivalent with an overall GPA (grade point average) equivalent to 5.0 on the 7-point UQ scale, together with demonstrated research experience equivalent to honours IIA will be considered for PhD entry on a case by case basis.
A bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of documented relevant research experience, including research publications.
